“I cannot believe how completely [Mr. Gindes] was attuned to the content of the music, the beautiful piano tone, and the absolutely appropriate sentiment of every moment!” ~ New York Concert Review

Ian Gindes is a pianist and a recording artist who also serves as a commissioned officer in the Illinois Army National Guard. Mr. Gindes holds a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree and a Master of Music in Piano Pedagogy from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he studied with Ian Hobson. As an artist, he combines a passion for music with a spirit of service to bring classical music to new audiences.

His 2023 recording, Rachmaninoff, features solo piano works by Rachmaninoff as well as a tribute to the composer by jazz artist, reviewer, and composer Jed Distler. This recording earned praise from The Whole Note magazine, whose review stated, “Gindes’ illustrious renditions reveal a visionary glow behind the eloquent melancholy, virtuosic exterior of these Rachmaninoff masterworks.” His 2016 recording, American Visions, celebrated the American musical tradition from the 20th century to the present and was praised by Gramophone magazine for Gindes’ “keyboard brilliance.” American Visions also received acclaim from The Whole Note magazine, New York Concert Review, and Fanfare.

Gindes has performed solo recitals at Carnegie Hall, Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, and PianoForte Chicago, as well as the Nixon Centre for the Arts. He has been a featured artist with the St. Louis Philharmonic. His music has been featured on Jed Distler’s show Between The Keys on WWFM, the Radio Arts Foundation of St. Louis, MO, American Veterans Radio, and SiriusXM Symphony Hall. He has been interviewed and has presented his music live on many other outlets, including Chicago’s WFMT, WGN-TV Chicago’s Midday Fix, Sandy and Friends on AZTV Channel 7 of Phoenix, AZ, and most recently, CBS Chicago’s “Chicago’s Hidden Gems.”

In addition to his recording and performance career, Mr. Gindes shares his passion for music via social media and teaching. His current projects include collaborating to perform and record Rachmaninoff’s cello sonata for an online audience, a new presentation of correspondence sent by American service members and their families to honor their legacy in the form of works for voice and piano, and upcoming performances and videos on YouTube.

Gindes continues to serve the community as Branch Chief Officer for the Illinois Army National Guard with the rank of Major, managing personnel matters for the State of Illinois. During the covid pandemic, he served as the HHD 65th Company Commander, managing personnel placement and resources for relief centers. Ian believes that “artistry, similar to the military, is about taking risks and making sacrifices, even when you are challenged to achieve excellence. Interpreting great works of music is about understanding who we are as individuals.”
