Thomas Y. Tirino is considered the leading authority and interpreter of the music of Ernesto Lecuona. and is viewed as a major exponent of Spanish and Latin American classical music. He has appeared as a recitalist & with orchestras in standard classical and Latin American piano music in the major cities of the US, Europe, Asia, Central America and the Caribbean. He has performed in Russia at the Bolshoi Philharmonic Halls in Moscow, St. Petersburg and Minsk as well as all-Tchaikovsky programs at Tchaikovsky‘s home/museum in Klin; Toronamon and Yamaha Halls in Tokyo, Japan; Symphony Hall in Boston; Teatro Nacional ‘Garcia Lorca’ in Havana, Cuba; Teatro Melico Salazar in San Jose, Costa Rica; Cas di Cultura in Oranjenstad, Aruba; Philharmonic Hall in Krakow, Poland; Philharmonic Hall in Sofia, Bulgaria; Broward Center for Performing Arts, Fort Lauderdale; Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, Florida; & many times at Lincoln Center in New York City. He has performed with numerous orchestras, including The Boston Pops with Keith Lockhart, Orquesta Sinfónica of Tenerife, The Polish National Symphony Orchestra, Krakow Radio Orchestra, Bulgarian Radio Orchestra, Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional of Costa Rica, Jacksonville Symphony, Portland Symphony, & The Symphony of the Americas, Tirino has given US Premieres of works by Lecuona, at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale, The Gypsy King”, exclaimed the South Florida Sun-Sentinel Times when it bestowed the title on Thomas Tirino after a recital in Miami. “He gave the most dazzling displays of prestidigitation heard all year.” The New York Times wrote about Tirino: “He has a big technique. Just how big became evident”. and the Miami Herald stated: “His performances have become legendary. Tirino strikes the right balance of zest and tender lyricism”. After an all-Liszt recital in the Bolshoi in St. Petersburg Russia, the St. Petersburg Express wrote: “Tirino stands out as one of the major musical events in the life of the city”.

Tirino has recorded The Complete Piano Works of Ernesto Lecuona in 5 volumes for the BIS label, winning much critical acclaim: Time magazine chose Volume I as one of the ten best recordings of 1995 from all musical categories exclaiming, “Fingers Ablaze,” and Gramophone dubbed him “The Latin Lover” writing, “his cut glass virtuosity and wickedly seductive charm are truly formidable”. Tirino is editor for the re-publication of Lecuona’s piano music. He has recorded for the KOCH International label: Piano Music of Joaquín Nin. & Piano Music of Ernesto Nazareth. Tirino has recorded the Piano Concerti by MacDowell for Centaur, & The Complete Works for Piano and Orchestra by Paderewski with the Polish National Symphony for Newport Classics.

Among Tirino's many awards are PTNA International Competition, All Nippon TV Award and Mikimoto Prize in Tokyo, Japan, and Gina Bachauer Award from Juilliard. He has citations of honor from The Paderewski Foundation, and the Yusupov Palace in St. Petersburg, Russia as the first American to perform there. The composer David Diamond wrote and dedicated the piano solo, Meditation on Kol Nidrei. to him. Tirino studied at the Juilliard School of Music, graduating with all his degrees in Music there.
