Tommy Mandel, born a twin in New York City in 1949, studied piano ages 6-16 with Harry Davis, Hoff Barthelson, Bert Dince and Georges Bermont. Mutating into Rock and “Jazz”, he graduated Bowdoin College in 1971, in Philosophy, Music Theory, and mind altering substances. He has toured and/or recorded with Bryan Adams, Dire Straits, Tina Turner, The Clash, David Johansen, Ian Hunter/Mick Ronson, Pavarotti - Michael Kamen, The Pretenders, The Spinners, B-52’s, John Waite, Peter Wolf, Little Steven, Nils Lofgren, Bo Diddley, Bon Jovi, Cyndi Lauper, Richie Sambora, Tremaine Hawkins and currently, Denis Leary. He has released eleven CD’s, available on all streaming platforms, plus a collector’s EP and 2 LPs on Invisible City Editions, Mello Magic, and Music For Insomniacs. His synth-strumentals and some newer songs are available at soundcloud.com/tommy-mandel/sets/chrono-logical

Since the turn of the century, he’s been Music Director of the Theatre Department at Sarah Lawrence College, a position he swaps with Jed Distler every 25 years. He has written the rock operas, Joe’s Opera, Sea of Simile, and The Maurice LaRue Rhythm Revue. The first was optioned twice for Broadway after short runs at Café LaMama and St. Clements. The second was mounted at Sarah Lawrence and is now a fully realized cartoon opera on YouTube. He is a member of ASCAP, having composed and recorded a trove of sports muzak in the 90’s, aughts, and ’10’s, and is a member of Local 802 AFofM. He plays piano every Monday evening at The University Club, on 54th and Fifth Ave, alas, it’s a members only situation. He lives in his studio on the Upper West Side, can play all night, and cherishes two daughters and three granddaughters. A digest of his work can be found at tommymandel.wordpress.com

Hello Rene, I’m so glad we got to reconnect after so many years, thanks to the good people at Mumeneer and Klavierhaus. I confess your memory must be stronger than mine (perhaps because I have all that music flying around inside my head!)
If you like, email me at mandeltommy (at gmail) - thanks again.
